Price : I think this is a special painting, even strange, but in a right way! It has become a very controlled expression. The colours are in evening mood and the lines are mostly vertical and horizontal, not many irregularities. But most of the figures are kind of bombastic. Most function together, but there are some individualistic as well. On the upper edge, close to centre there are a colony of a more recognisable style from this artist, the dream… I had the Gulag camps in my mind while I made this painting. I rarely decide to make a certain line or a certain figure in my painting. But if my mind is in a certain state, that usually have some consequences for how I work. People in Sovjet were summarily convicted to years of prison life. For many this was lethal. The worst camps had the ambitions to work the prisoners to death. But in any circumstance where humans are together, they put some colours to their existence, tell some jokes and sing songs. They might have to be careful, because it could be forbidden to do so. But there are always small things that spark in their everyday life.
