Precipice

130×98
Acrylic on canvas
2017
There is something unsettling about a precipice. Looking up is different from looking down, but both perspectives can create a form of tickling in one’s stomach and a form of dizziness in one’s head. When I had finished this painting, I didn’t know what to name it. I had an experience of standing on a road with a mountain behind me and a waterfall in front of me. A visitor to my studio suggested Precipice would be a good name for this painting, and thinking of that recent experience, I accepted it gladly.
