Sightseeing of Minds

120×300
Acrylic on canvas
2012
A plan of making a larger format painting was taking place in my mind. There were a lot of different motifs passing by, most of them probably more ambitious than my ability to make them. I ordered two identical canvases, and had to wait some time to have them delivered. I connected them and treated two surfaces as one through the whole process. The first part of the making was to divide the surface in large fields with a clear dividing line between them and give each of the fields a different background colour. Then I covered the whole surface with a coat of iridescent white. And then started to work on the coloured figures, the indigo lines and the two blue explosions. Towards the end of the work one day I got a phone call from Ruth, my wife. She informed me that her mother just had died. And I dedicated the last figure I worked on to the late Eleanor. (That is in fact the greenish rectangle in the lower left of the middle) So what is the painting showing? It is for everyone to decide for themselves. My own thoughts have their origin in what I was told as a child. When a person died, she or he became a star in the sky. So that’s why Eleanor is shown among other sightseeing minds crossing the sky.
