War is inherently unpleasant, with no clear winners and only losers. Throughout my life, the losers have captivated me, drawing me to literature and images. I acknowledge this interest as a way to prevent future wars, though I recognise its impracticality. Art, despite its limitations, serves as a weapon against war. I created this painting nonetheless. In February 1945, just months before World War Il concluded, Dresden was subjected to a devastating bombing. Over two days and nights, the entire city was engulfed in flames resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 25,000 lives. The haunting images of Dresden, Warsaw, Hiroshima and Nagasaki have indelibly etched themselves into my mental archive. This painting insisted to be made in the late summer of 2011. A war brings chaos. Every order is under pressure. The room for life is distorted. A hell is imposed. Order and rights disappear. Only those who are sending the drones and missiles decide. The smell and noise cannot be imagined. But inside this hell there are human beings, children, parents and grandparents. Some of them will survive. Eventually these survivors clear the ruins and begin to build the new reality; the chaos is a new beginning! They hate the war from the bottom of their hearts and they pray and believe it must be the last one. Even those in charge must understand that nothing is gained by it!
