Saying Farewell to Madiba

100×80
Acrylic on canvas
2013
Nelson Mandela has been in my awareness my entire life; somewhere distant – South Africa has always been far away for me. But his face and his patience have always in way overlooked my days. I made this painting while reading his autobiography, and while he was in hospital and we all knew that he was going to die before long. I said goodbye to him this way. Usually I don’t include representative element in my paintings. But Mandelas profile should be recognisable. I called it Madiba, his tribal name as a boy.
