For many years, I have loved the Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Flute Serenade, which carries this title. Rarely do tunes enter the inner rooms of my liking the first time I hear them. This was an exception, and I recommend the piece to anybody. The title points to a magical scenery. Carl Nielsen lived from 1865 to 1931. He is a musical bridge between earlier styles of music and modernism. He is one of those composers that can do it all: from a sentimental song tune to the most modern symphonies of his time. Fog always obscures something. Sometimes one is anxious to see the landscape behind it; and sometimes – like in this picture, one doesn’t want the fog to go away! It is my experience that “translating” music into pictures is an impossible exercise. Using the inspiration it creates is another thing!
